About Us

The Medicine & Health Sciences Library is one of five branch libraries of the SU Library and Information Service and is situated in the Education Block of the FMHS.

The library serves primarily, the researchers, lecturers, staff and registered students of the Faculty, but also other client categories.

The library contributes to the mission of the Library and Information Service by providing a world-class and innovative information service and learning spaces to primarily the Tygerberg campus community.

An inter-tertiary institution library system, called CALICO (Cape Library Co-operative) gives access to catalogue searches and lending of resources between tertiary institutions on a daily basis in the Western Cape.

Requests from students and staff members for journal articles or books which are not available via the library’s holdings or the electronic resources are requested via an interlibrary loan system from other libraries in South Africa or from abroad.

The library provides self-study/reading facilities for about 194 persons. Medicine and Health Sciences Faculty librarians give individual and group training to students. Training programmes are developed in collaboration with lecturers.

Students are expected to do research on a regular basis. To assist them in this endeavour, structured information training sessions on efficient literature search techniques are provided.
