    Short Course in Managing Health and Nutrition in Adverse Conditions (72540)Purpose

    To enable health workers or people educating the community or who are involved with the community to identify malnutrition and address it appropriately, specifically in adverse conditions. Qualifying students will be able to:

    • describe nutrition principles for promoting balanced nutritional adequacy.
    • identify nutrition-related diseases and malnutrition.
    • implement nutrition management principles in aim of preventing disease.
    • apply balanced food decision-making and adjustments.

    Target group

    Health professionals working with communities, groups and individuals affected by malnutrition and nutrition-related diseases.
    Consequently the target group for this course is limited to the following students:

    • community extension workers
    • community health workers
    • health aid workers concerned with food security (for example missionaries)
    • medical representatives
    • primary healthcare professionals (for example: nurses, medical doctors)
    • allied health professionals (for example: social workers, occupational therapists)
    • educators and caretakers of children

    Admission requirements

    Senior Certificate or an equivalent NQF level 4 qualification. Registration with a Health Professions Council will be a benefit.

     Tuition method

    Basic tuition is by means of distance learning through outcomes based education. The study package includes a study guide, tutorial letters, learning experiences in the form of self-assessment activities, formative assessment (written assignments and case studies) and a summative assessment as part of a portfolio. Students will be guided through the study process from registration by means of direct/indirect contact with the lecturers. Guidance throughout the course will be given ensuring comprehension and acquired skills.

    UCT Distinguished Teacher Award for 2026

    Students and staff are hereby invited to submit nominations for the Distinguished Teacher Award for 2026.

    The Distinguished Teacher Award recognises excellent teaching and is the highest accolade awarded to teaching staff at all levels within the university. Through the award, the University of Cape Town acknowledges the primary place of teaching and learning in the university’s work. All full-time academic staff who have taught students at the institution for at least three years are eligible.

    Criteria

    Each year the Distinguished Teacher Award Committee considers nominations made by students and staff on behalf of a number of dedicated teachers. The committee examines each submission in accordance with a set of guidelines, terms of reference and selection criteria, including:

    reflection on teaching practice

    versatility in different teaching settings

    transformational capacities

    innovation in teaching

    an influence on students’ career development

    concern and sensitivity towards the needs of students

    endorsements from colleagues and students

    intellectual vigour and communication skills in the interpretation and presentation of subject matter

    consistently outstanding student evaluations.

    The committee may recommend up to four recipients per year and, in exceptional cases, up to six recipients in a year.

    To submit a nomination

    Nominations should be submitted in the form of an email and should consist of a statement making the case for the award. The email can include:

    details of excellence in teaching over a number of years

    information about the nominee’s approach

    where the strengths of the nominee lie, for example, whether the teacher’s strengths lie in lecturing to large classes, in laboratory instruction, in less formal teaching activities outside the classroom, or in an innovative teaching technique.

    Please submit nominations to Amanda Barratt before 22 May 2026.

    Upon acceptance of the nomination, nominees will be required to prepare for submission a teaching portfolio of no more than 50 pages, which includes their teaching philosophy, endorsements from students and colleagues, and anonymised student evaluation data for all courses taught for the last three years. Nominees are required to submit their documentation by 7 July 2026.

    Details Of  Taletso TVET College Application 2026/2027

    Taletso FET College is the result of a merger between Lehurutshe College of Education, Mafikeng College and Lichtenburg College. The three campuses are situated in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality of the North West Province and are 80km from each other.

    Lehurutshe Campus

    The town of Lehurutshe is a township with no central business or industrial centres, The small businesses that are currently operating in the area are mostly one-man enterprises. These small enterprises do not create efficient job opportunities for the community and most of its inhabitants must find work in nearby towns.

    The campus was previously a college of education where technical and business studies educators were trained. The campus offers training opportunities to some of the very remote rural areas within theNgaka Modiri Molema District. The campus has hostel facilities that can accommodate up to 380 students.

    The Lehurutshe Campus and The Mafikeng Campus have been offering end-user computing to 400 learners at NQF Level 3. This is done in partnership with the municipalities, the ISETT-SETA andSPL Communications.

    Lichtenburg Campus

    The Lichtenburg Campus is located 68km from Mahikeng and it is the only campus in the North West Province that offers training in primary agriculture. It has also been offering programmes and learnerships in agriculture in the surrounding rural areas.Taletso FET College has a student representative council which comprises of four representatives from each campus. Every campus has different student activities such as soccer, netball, chess, ballroom dancing and athletics.

    There are also student resource centres where the students can do research, complete assignments and study.Lichtenburg, as a town, has a large potential for growth. There are two large cement factories (Lafarge and Holcim). Property development is on the increase. Some of the developments in the pipeline include a diamond mine and two large shopping centres.

    These developments have the potential increase business and finance as well as trade and wholesale activities.

    Mafikeng Campus

    Mafikeng Campus is situated in Mahikeng, which is the capital of the North West Province. The town is surrounded by rural villages governed by the tribal system of authority. Game farming, guesthouses and vegetable farming are typical economic activities in the area.

    The Mafikeng Campus was formerly known as the Mmabatho Manpower Centre. There are currently 1609 students enrolled at the campus. The campus offers training in nine workshops including a carpentry workshop.

    NSFAS will reopen 2026 applications as from 9 January 2026. Learners and students are encouraged to make use of this application period if you have not applied during the 1 August 2016 to 30 November 2016 application period. This reopened application period will close on 20 January 2026 for learners and students who will be studying at a public university, and on 14 February 2026 at a TVET College.

    Application results for applicants who applied during the 1 August 2016 to 30 November 2016 period will receive communication via SMS as from 5 January 2026, thus it is important that we have your correct cellphone number. Update your contact details by calling the NSFAS Contact Centre on 086 006 7327.

    To all 2026 first year students

    All students who will register at public universities/ TVET Colleges for the first time in 2026 and need financial support can apply directly to NSFAS for financial assistance as from 9 January 2026. Applications will remain open between 9 January 2026 to 20 January 2026 for those who will be studying at a university and 9 January 2026 to 14 February 2026 for those who will be studying at a TVET College .

    NSFAS is in a process to receive all your information and details from the university/college where you are currently enrolled. You will be automatically migrated to the student-centred model, and will be notified by SMS/post once NSFAS has received and registered your details.

    To all current university/TVET college students, who are not funded by NSFAS, but intend to apply for NSFAS assistance for the 2026 academic year

    All the above mentioned students – including those who were previously on a government funded bursary programme not offered by NSFAS – can apply for NSFAS financial assistance for the 2026 academic year as from 9 January 2026 to 20 January 2026 for those who will be studying at a university and 9 January 2026 to 14 February 2026 for those who will be studying at a TVET College .
