    National Student Financial Aid Scheme

    The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government funded organisation, providing financial aid to students studying for a tertiary qualification.

    To be eligible, students must:-

    • Be South African citizens;
    • Be studying for a first qualification;
    • Be financially needy;
    • Demonstrate the potential to succeed academically.

    To calculate the value of the loan to which a student is entitled, the NSFAS Means Test is used.  Students with a gross annual family income in excess of R180 000 will seldom be eligible for funding.

    Limited funds are available so applicants will not necessarily be granted funding from NSFAS. It is important, therefore that applications are submitted as early as possible.

    If a student passes all subjects in the year that funding is obtained from NSFAS, 40% of the value of the NSFAS loan is converted into a bursary and is credited to the student’s NSFAS accounting during the course of the following year.

    The student will be asked to start repaying the loan once employed and earning a salary in excess of R26 300 per year. Repayments will be based on the individual’s earnings.

    For 2009, the interest on the loan is 7.6%. This amount is reviewed annually.

  • Unisa launches innovative teaching and learning tool

    body19

    From left: Dr Louise van Dyk, Dr Hannelie Marx, Dr Elnerine Greeff, Prof Blessing Mbatha (CoD: Communication Science) & Prof Yolandi Slabbert

    A team of lecturers from the Department of Communication Science in the College of Human Sciences (CHS) recently launched a teaching and learning tool to assist students to overcome the pitfalls of plagiarism. The new Writing for Academic Integrity tool was developed by Dr Elnerine Greeff, Dr Hannelie Marx, Prof Yolandi Slabbert and Dr Louise van Dyk.

    The team says that the tool not only forms part of a bigger college project, but it utilises Google sites and offers a series of fun and informative video tutorials. These tutorials guide students through a variety of topics that are integral to academic writing: technical guidelines in academic writing, plagiarism, how to reference and advanced referencing.

    The importance of this tool cannot be overstated, says the team, adding that academic writing, referencing, and subsequent issues surrounding plagiarism are areas that students tend to struggle with consistently. By providing them with this tremendously helpful and innovative tool, they now have all the crucial information at their fingertips.

    “The video tutorials on the site are designed to act as a tool to add to the students’ academic arsenal to improve their writing and the academic integrity of their work,” Greeff explained. The site also provides students with the opportunity to interact with the creators – encouraging them to comment or ask questions.

    However, it is not only the students who will benefit from using this tool. It provides lecturers with the opportunity to brush up on technical requirements and to always be ready with an answer at hand.

    The team is currently negotiating the development of a mobile application. This is particularly significant, since it will be the first mobile application to be developed in CHS.

    Greeff and the team encourage departmental staff to utilise the Writing for Academic Integrity site and to spread the word to students about this exciting new teaching tool available to them.

    Click here for the link to the site.

  • Certificate in Cyber Security 2026 Intake In South Africa

    Certificate in Cyber Security 2026 Intake In South Africa

    Certificate in Cyber Security – Online*
    (*resident exam terms apply)

    The very popular Certificate in Cyber Security offered by the Centre for Cyber Security in the Academy for Computer Science and Software Engineering of the University of Johannesburg will be available from July this year in an online mode.

    This makes it possible for any person, anywhere in the world, to register for this Certificate and complete it totally online, including an online examination*.

    However, as this is the first time this Certificate will be offered in this way, an examination restriction* will hold for this first offering starting in July 2026. This *restriction will require any student who registers and completes the modules in an online mode, to take the 5 module examinations physically at the University of Johannesburg on the specified examination dates. This means that such students will have to travel to the Auckland Park campus of the University in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, to write and complete the examinations.

    We plan that from the beginning of 2026, this restriction will fall away, and students will be able to complete the examination online from any place. Final arrangements of dates and logistics for writing the examinations online are still being finalized. Online students will be able to contact the Course Coordinator by email to ask questions about the course material – such questions will be directed to the module experts if necessary. The course and study material are specified and provided on the course website – three modules require a prescribed text book.

    The ‘Courses’ tab at www.cybersecurity.org.za provides the structure, content and examinations dates of all 5 modules making up the Certificate in Cyber Security (see July 2026 (Second) Intake for examination dates). Students completing the examinations and assignments successfully, will receive an official Certificate in Cyber Security from the University of Johannesburg.

    Please contact: Ms Simangele Msibi / Mr Carl Van der Westhuizen on 011 559 2967 for more information.
