The Department of Nursing Science offers undergraduate and post graduate degrees

Undergraduate Degree

Bachelor of Nursing Science (B Cur)

The B Cur programme which allows graduates to register with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as professional nurses (General, Psychiatric and Community) and as Midwives/Accoucheurs. For more information follow link:

Postgraduate Degrees

Bachelor of Nursing Science (Education and Administration) [B Cur (I et A)

The programme provides professional nurses registered with the SANC the opportunity to obtain professional post-basic qualifications. The programme is offered through flexi-learning. The programmes that can be followed are:

  • Clinical nursing with sub-speciality of Child Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Emergency Nursing, Neonatal Nursing, Operating Theatre Nursing, Primary Health
  • Community Nursing
  • Nurisng Education
  • Nursing Management

Master of Nursing Science (M Cur)

The Master’s degree can be obtained by virtue of dissertation or course work. The specialisation areas are: Advanced Psychiatric Nursing, Child Nursing, Community Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Emergency Nursing, Neonatal Nursing, Nursing Education and Nursing Management.

The  PhD and DCur programmes requires candidates to make a unique contribution to the body of knowledge in Nursing.

University Of Pretoria Nursing Admission requirements

Mathematics, Physical Science, Biology or Physiology are recommended subjects. Selection is based on academic merit. An AP-score Grade 11(25) and Grade 12(24) is required. A personal interview is conducted with every applicant. An NSC for degree purposes is required with the following minimum subject requirements and AP-score per subject, indicated in brackets:

  • English (4);
  • Additional Language (4);
  • Four other subjects (4);
  • Life Orientation (4) – Life Orientation is excluded from the APS-calculation.

Admission to the course is subject to Departmental selection, and applications close on 31 May of the preceding year. Selection also includes writing the University’s admission test.

Applications for study at the University of Pretoria in is fully online.
Application for admission to undergraduate study programmes for both South African and international citizens close on specific dates in the year preceding the year of study. Check the list of closing dates supplied below to make sure that you submit your application on time.
