NB: In the case of applications submitted by mail, payments will be accepted by bank deposit only. Use your ID number as the reference. Postal orders or bank guaranteed cheques must be made out to the Vaal University of Technology. No cash should accompany your application form.

NURSING PROGAMMES

There are three Nursing Programmes offered at the Vaal University of Technology under the prescripts of the South African Nursing Council regulations under Act 33 of 2005.

  1. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

1.1 BACHELOR OF NURSING R425: NURSING (General, Community, and Psychiatry) and Midwifery.

NB!! This is an undergraduate programme for students with matric and the following subjects as listed below

NSC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME

Four years of full time study at Vaal University of Technology.

Clinical learning is achieved by placement in health care facilities accredited by the South African Nursing Council, for General Nursing, Community Health, Psychiatry and Midwifery.

Membership to the South African Nursing Council is mandatory and proof of indemnity is required for all nursing students.

 

What are the functions of a registered nurse with General Nursing, Community Health, Psychiatry and Midwifery?

To render a professional service based on the knowledge, skills, professional thinking, behaviour and attitudes to pursue their profession as nurses: general, community health psychiatry and midwifery/maternity care, at preventative, promotive, curative and rehabilitative levels. The nursing care is rendered independently, interdependently and dependently for patients/clients in health care settings at District, National and International levels.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

There is a great demand of registered nurses worldwide. Registered nurses assist in relieving workload in most health care settings at hospitals, as well as in the communities. They are also instrumental in managing psychiatric condition, in all mental health settings, including specialized care. Other career opportunities include Primary Health Care provision, Maternity, Health Service Management. Nursing specialities courses like Operating Theatre Technique, Intensive Care, Oncology, Advanced Community Nursing, Nursing/Health Service Education, Emergency Nursing and Nurse Researcher can be pursued after programme completion.

 

  1. POST GRADUATE PROGRAMMES

2.1 NATIONAL HIGHER DIPLOMA COMMUNITY NURSING AND B TECH COMMUNITY NURSING

NB!!!  These postgraduate programmes are offered to Professional Nurses who meet the below mentioned criteria for admission

NATIONAL HIGHER DIPLOMA BACCALAUREUS TECHNOLOGIAE
Matric Certificate/STD 10 Matric Certificate/STD 10
Diploma in General Nursing Diploma in General Nursing, Diploma in Midwifery/Psychiatry and Diploma in Community Nursing OR
Diploma in Midwifery or Diploma in Psychiatry Diploma in Nursing (General, Community Health and Psychiatry) and Midwifery

An average of 60% is required in General Nursing, Midwifery/Psychiatry and Community Nursing to enter the Baccalaureus Technologiae

DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME

Two years of part time study at Vaal University of Technology and placement in health care facilities for Community Nursing and Nursing Administration practical.

What are the functions of a Community Nurse specialist?

Rendering nursing care to clients at community base level, preventative, promotive, curative and rehabilitative care. Conducting family visits, school visits, occupational health visits and manages community health facilities and staff.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

There is a great demand of registered nurses with Community Nursing and Nursing Administration as additional qualifications. Registered nurses with this qualification are the backbone of relieving the workload at clinics/community health centres as clients/patients are assisted before being referred to hospitals, they also render continuous care to patients after discharge from hospitals.
