    Applications Reopen 9 January 2026

    NSFAS will reopen 2026 applications as from 9 January 2026. Learners and students are encouraged to make use of this application period if you have not applied during the 1 August 2016 to 30 November 2016 application period. This reopened application period will close on 20 January 2026 for learners and students who will be studying at a public university, and on 14 February 2026 at a TVET College.

    Application results for applicants who applied during the 1 August 2016 to 30 November 2016 period will receive communication via SMS as from 5 January 2026, thus it is important that we have your correct cellphone number. Update your contact details by calling the NSFAS Contact Centre on 086 006 7327.

    To all 2026 first year students

    All students who will register at public universities/ TVET Colleges for the first time in 2026 and need financial support can apply directly to NSFAS for financial assistance as from 9 January 2026. Applications will remain open between 9 January 2026 to 20 January 2026 for those who will be studying at a university and 9 January 2026 to 14 February 2026 for those who will be studying at a TVET College .

    To all current university/ TVET college students already funded by NSFAS

    NSFAS is in a process to receive all your information and details from the university/college where you are currently enrolled. You will be automatically migrated to the student-centred model, and will be notified by SMS/post once NSFAS has received and registered your details.

    To all current university/TVET college students, who are not funded by NSFAS, but intend to apply for NSFAS assistance for the 2026 academic year

    All the above mentioned students – including those who were previously on a government funded bursary programme not offered by NSFAS – can apply for NSFAS financial assistance for the 2026 academic year as from 9 January 2026 to 20 January 2026 for those who will be studying at a university and 9 January 2026 to 14 February 2026 for those who will be studying at a TVET College .

    The objective of this short course is to present an opportunity for prospective internal auditors and people currently working as internal auditors to receive training to enable them to conduct a basic internal audit.Target group

    • People working in the field of internal auditing without any formal academic training in internal auditing or the internal audit process.
    • People who want to refresh theirs skills in the field of internal auditing.
    • People who are interested in obtaining the skills to conduct a basic internal audit.

    Registration for the first semester opens in January and closes in February with a two-hour examination in May/June.

    Tuition is presented fully online through distance education, allowing practicing internal auditors and/or internal auditors who travel extensively, the freedom to keep up to date with their studiesKind of assessment

    Formative assessment and examination admission will comply with UNISA’s formative assessment rules and policies.
    Formative assessment:
    The assignment marks will contribute 10% and the examination 90% to the final mark of the learner. In order to qualify for the certificate of this short course, a final mark of at least 50% must be obtained.

    Topic 1 – Basic concepts of internal auditing
    After completing this topic, learners should be able to define internal auditing and understand why internal auditing is necessary as well as the advantages and characteristics of performing an internal audit.
     
    Topic 2 – Type of engagements and business processes
    After completing this topic, learners should be able to understand the different types of audit engagements and business processes and be able to define the scope and objectives of an internal audit of a financial systems audit.
     
    Topic 3 – Business risks and controls
    After completing this topic, learners should be able to understand the theory and practical aspects of business risks, risk and controls and the effect thereof on the internal audit process.
     
    Topic 4 – Planning the internal audit
    After completing this topic, learners should be able to list and understand the various steps within the pre-engagement and planning phase of an internal audit and be able to apply these steps in practice.
     
    Topic 5 – Performing the audit engagement
    After completing this topic, learners should be able to list and understand the various steps within the execution phase of an internal audit of a financial system and be able to apply these steps in practice. Learners should also be able to understand the requirements for audit evidence and the methods for collecting audit evidence.
     
    Topic 6 – Draft an internal audit report
    After completing this topic, learners should be able to list and understand the various steps within the reporting phase of an internal audit and be able to apply these steps in practice. Learners should also be able to understand the importance, the essential elements and other requirements of working papers as well as the layout of the audit file.
     
    Topic 7 – Follow-up
    After completing this topic, learners should be able to list and understand the importance and requirements of the follow-up phase of an internal audit and be able to apply these steps in practice.Programme administrator(s)

    Admissions

    Acceptance of a Student

    • Acceptance by the university as a registered student does not automatically qualify a student for enrollment in the school or in a particular department.
    • All students who qualify for registration on the basis of maturity or acknowledged prior learning may be required to write a school entrance test on a date specified by the school.
    • BA(Ed) students will be admitted to the School of Human and Social Sciences only if admission is sought before the commencement of the third academic year of study.
    • Students wishing to follow service courses in the School will be admitted only in accordance with pre-determined numbers for every department.

    Admission Requirements for BA
    A student must have achieved an E symbol in English Higher grade or D in English Standard Grade to be registered for enrolment in the School of Human and Social Sciences.

    Further requirements may be stipulated by the departments.

    Admission for BAEd

    • A student must have a matric exemption.
    • Students without matriculation exemption should have age exemption with adequate rating. Each year, ratings are determined by the university.
    • Candidates will be subjected to a selection process.
    Duration of Study
    • BA studies, except for Social Work (which has a minimum of four years), involves a minimum of three years of full time study.
    • The maximum duration of the studies is not to exceed three years more than the minimum required to complete the degree, at which time the studies may be terminated unless otherwise decided by Senate after application by the student.
    Duration of BAEd Programme
    • The duration of the programme for the degree is a minimum of four years.
    • In the first, second, and third years of undergraduate study, students in the full-time employment can be registered only part-time and can take no more than six modules per year.
    • In the fourth year, students in full-time employment can be registered only part-time and can take no more than twelve modules per year.
    Academic Progress
    • A student shall not repeat a module at first or second year level more than once, in case of failure. Cancellation of a course after the commencement of the second semester for year courses and after closing date for cancellation of semester courses or modules shall be deemed a failure, except if Senate decides otherwise on the basis of special circumstances.
    • No second year courses shall be taken unless two year courses (or four semester courses or modules) have been passed at first year level; in order to register for third year courses, a student shall have passed six year courses (Twelve semester courses or modules) at first and second year level.
    • Sub Minimum Rule
      • A sub minimum of 40% will apply in each individual paper and in each assessment category, except where otherwise indicated in departmental rules.
      • Old curriculum: A student may qualify for a supplementary examination if he has failed the sub-minimum requirement in one paper only, and has a final mark (year and examination) of 50% or higher. In such a case the candidate must rewrite all papers in the supplementary.
      • Modular curriculum: If a below sub-minimum mark is obtained in any of the assessment categories (excluding the examination), the module coordinator may decide to prescribe supplementary. assessment in that category. In the case of below sub-minimum performance in the examination, but a 50% or higher average, the particular examination may be re-written without registration for the module at the next scheduled opportunity. No additional additional supplementary. will be provided for.
    • An undergraduate or diploma or certificate student whose progress is unsatisfactory, will be required to withdraw from the School , if after two years of study within this School s/he has not completed sufficient first year courses or modules to gain entry to the second academic year of study.
    • Senate, on the recommendation of the School, may similarly cancel or refuse to renew the registration of any student whose academic record is regarded by the School as so unsatisfactory that the qualification will not be completed within the required period.
