    University of South Africa Accreditation

University of South Africa Accreditation, Unisa received a Royal Charter in 1877. It currently operates under the Statute of the University of South Africa issued in terms of the Higher Education Act (No. 101 of 1997), and is accredited by the South African Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education (CHE). Its qualifications (including those of the SBL) are registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

    International Accreditation of Unisa’s qualifications

Unisa is inter alia listed in the following publications: International Handbook of Universities published by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and officially verified by the International Association of Universities.

In other cases the publication of an institution’s name in specific authoritative publications forms the basis of accreditation. Students must however enquire from the specific foreign country/university whether Unisa’s qualifications are accredited/recognised.

Internationally, Unisa is listed in the Commonwealth Universities Handbook of 1999 and also in the International Handbook of Universities of 1998.

On 12 January 2002, Unisa was granted full institutional accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). The accreditation lapsed in March 2007, and Unisa did not pursue renewal.

Is the University of South Africa internationally accredited?
Unisa operates in accordance with the Higher Education Act 101 of 1997, as amended. It is recognised by the South African Department of Education (DoE), accredited by the South African Council on Higher Education (CHE) and all its qualifications are registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

University of Cape Town NSFAS 2026 Details

2026 NSFAS & UCT Financial Assistance

As of 1 August 2016, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) opened its student-centred application model. First-time applications for financial aid, as well as funding renewal for those students who are already recipients of NSFAS funding, will be handled centrally via NSFAS. Although applicants may have applied to multiple institutions for admission to study, only one financial aid application directly to NSFAS will be required.

UCT will co-fund and be part of this new student-centred application model and all students and learners who need financial assistance should apply to NSFAS via the latter’s on-line application system.

UCT has additional funding programmes to assist students. UCT co-funds NSFAS financial aid students and also offers a funding programme – GAP funding – for those not eligible for NSFAS. We do not require a separate application to determine eligibility for funding from UCT as we will receive directly from NSFAS the information we require in order to determine your eligibility for UCT funding programmes. Kindly read the detailed information provided on all UCT’s financial assistance programmes and the general rules and policies that apply (see columns on the left).

The process for the various NSFAS categories of application is outlined below:

    For all 2026 first-year applicants

All learners (potential first year students) applying to study next year can now apply directly to NSFAS. Applications are open from 1 August 2016 to 30 November 2016.

For all currently registered students (at any institution) already funded by NSFAS

You will automatically be migrated to the new student centred model, and will not be required to re-apply for funding. UCT will provide your funding details to NSFAS. Note that the academic eligibility renewal criteria will still be applied, and you will be informed of whether you still meet the requirements for funding.

For currently registered students intending to apply for NSFAS funding for the first time

Students not funded by NSFAS during 2016, or who are on a government-funded bursary programme, may apply for funding. For students in this category, applications will be open from 1 September 2016 to 30 November 2016. If you think that your current funder may not renew your funding, you are encouraged to submit a NSFAS application before the closing date.

    Late applications

Applications will not be accepted after the closing date of 30 November 2016 and it is therefore important that you get your application in on time. Late applications will not be considered.
