    Undergraduate Studies

    Undergraduate Degrees Offered

    • Bachelor of Business Science (BBusSc)

    Both degrees are divided into a variety of programmes to cater both for the interests of our students and the employment needs of the country. The first year in both degrees is more or less common, for two main reasons:

    • All commerce graduates should have a solid academic foundation in a range of core subject areas: Accounting, Information Systems, Economics, Business Law, Mathematics, Statistics and Thinking About Business.
    • We do not expect students new to university to finalise their degree or programme choices before being exposed to the disciplines at a tertiary level, so the more similar the programmes, the more flexibility students have to move around as they discover where their strengths and interests lie.
    • Both degrees are offered in the standard format or as extended programmes to students who may have experienced gaps or disparities in their educational or life experience. The BBusSc is traditionally offered over four years, but is also available as an extended programme over five years (called the Education Development Unit or EDU). Similarly, the BCom is traditionally offered over three years, but is available as a four year programme (called the Education Development Unit or EDU). It is important to note that, whether you spend three, four or five years doing your degree, your Commerce degree certificate will be the same, except to stipulate whether you have graduated with a BCom or BBusSc degree and the area of specialisation of the degree.

    School of Hotel Management Program

    Stenden endorses both a practical and theoretical approach to learning, believing that a balance between the two is the most beneficial approach. The first year is a foundation phase, and the following two years are the post foundation phase. Each year is divided into two semesters of two modules each.

    Real World Learning is the integration of theory and industry (practise) and is extremely important as:

    • It prepares students for professional life
    • It actively aids in Problem Based Learning, giving students the opportunity to test theories and techniques in real life situations
    • It provides students with contacts and assists in networking
    • Students are exposed to working life in a top, internationally recognised, learning hotel, such as MyPond Hotel or another partnering institution.

    Stenden South Africa offers a three year Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Hospitality Management, and is the only institution in South Africa to do so. Students will experience a critical practical learning experience in their 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of study, by working at a hotel learning facility such as My Pond Hotel for a number of weeks.

    First Year

    Hospitality Operations (HO), Guest Experience (GE), Resources, and Real World Learning (RWL).

    In their first year of study, students start at an operational level, working in the kitchen production process, familiarising themselves with essential practical skills such as:

    • The basics of hygiene and cooking and cutting techniques
    • Waiting techniques
    • Learning about wine
    • Learning about nutrition
    • Cost calculations
    • Operating the reception and housekeeping departments

    Second Year

    The second year focuses on the operational functions of a hotel. This is studied from 3 perspectives:

    • Operations Design: discusses how to set up operations which support the service concept of a company.
    • Hospitality Operations Performance: the day to day management of operations.
    • Hospitality Operations Environment: the context in which operations take place, with an emphasis on financial and legal issues.

    To support the students further development as a future manager, there is also a choice of Minor specialization. Students may chose from the following Minors:

    Third Year

    Strategic Semester (2 modules)

    Module 1: Strategic Hospitality Management (8 weeks) – this module challenges students on a strategic level. It enables them to understand why companies adopt certain strategies and make strategic decisions. The module is known as a “capstone module” which essentially means it ties together all previous subjects from finance and economics to human resource management and marketing.

    Module 2: Psychology of Management and Organisations (4 weeks) – this component of the third year allows students to understand the psychology behind management. It enables students to understand what motivates employees and managers while looking at theory related to teamwork, cohesion, staff satisfaction and general Human Resource Management.

    Real World Learning (4 weeks): the final component of the third year involves the pratical component of the module whereby students take on the role of a manager within the MyPond learning hotel. Students will be given full responsibility of a chosen department and work in conjunction with management in order to ensure the hotel is run as efficiently as possible. Students are exposed to the strategic nature of runnning a live hotel.

    Submitting Results and Documents:

    School learners must ensure that all examination results from Grade 11 until September of Grade 12 are submitted. Failure to do such may result in delays within the student’s application process. You might find that you applied early in Grade 12 and thus only sent in your final Grade 11 results. If this is true, as the year progresses and you receive more results keep sending them through to Rhodes, that way they will have all your results by the time finals come around.

    Transferring students should too ensure that all transcripts and academic records are submitted as early as possible as well as that a final transcript of current studies being undertaken reaches the Admissions Office as soon as possible after receipt.

    Once you have applied, keep a look out for your acceptance and/or provisional acceptance letter. In this letter students will be given a date by which an acceptance fee needs to be paid. Paying this fee means your place at the university and/or in residence is secured. In 2016 the fee is R750. This is non-refundable and is subject to change, but it is cheaper than changing your mind and not being able to go back.

    Once students are accepted, they will be assigned a student number and password that they can use to access ROSS (Rhodes Online Student Service). They can track their application process and residence application here, too.

  • How do I register for NBT?

    How do I register for NBT?

    Why do I have to register?

    The NBT Project and the local sites guarantee space and materials only for learners registered to write at a specific site on a specific day.

    1. Test sites and rooms are reserved with a fixed number of seats. The number of writers at a site is limited to the number of seats available. When registration reaches capacity, we work to increase available seats. When registration is very low at a site, the testing session may be cancelled.
    2. Registration information allows the NBT Project to contact writers if a test is moved to a different location, delayed or cancelled due to emergencies such as strikes, weather conditions, or power outages.
    3. A few days before the test date, NBT materials are sent to sites based on registration. Immediately following a test session, all NBT materials are returned – including unused tests and answer sheets. Adherence to test security policies prevents the NBT Project from shipping surplus materials.
    4. Registration does not ‘roll-over’ to a later session if you miss the scheduled date. Each test session has a unique set of testing materials. Test materials are prepared with the name and ID number of registered writers for each test session.

    What do I need in order to register for a NBT writing session?

    You must have your official ID booklet or foreign passport. You are required to enter your ID number and your name exactly as it appears in your ID booklet. You also need to check the following before you select the date and test site:

    • Your school’s calendar for sporting and social events, holidays, and exams;
    • Closing dates and application deadlines at all institutions where you intend to apply;
    • The language of instruction where you are applying; and
    • Your transportation options to the test site.

    How do I register?

    You must register on the Internet. Click on “Book a Test” and then simply follow the prompts. A letter confirming your registration and with an EasyPay barcode will be available for you to download and print immediately after you click on ‘Submit’.

    If you can access the Internet on your cell phone, you can go to the NBT website in the same way as you would to other sites. After entering your personal information, you can obtain your NBT registration letter and EasyPay barcode in one of two ways:

    1. Enter your email address and the letter will be sent for you to download and print later; or
    2. When you have access to a computer and printer, return to http://nbt.uct.ac.za, log-in with your ID, and then print the letter.

    You must take this NBT registration letter to an EasyPay Paypoint near you to pay the testing fees. You may also pay on the EasyPay website: www.easypay.co.za and then print out your receipt.

    What if I want to change my registration to a later date?

    Registration for the NBTs is specific to the date and location you select. You are allowed to make changes to your registration online until the closing date posted on the test schedule. Once registration closes for that test date, you cannot make any changes. If you miss the test for which you are registered, you must register again and pay again in order to write the NBTs.

    Remember that the test materials are unique for each test date; a new set of test materials must be prepared for you in order for you to write on a later date.

    What if I get sick or have a family emergency?

    If an emergency prevents you from writing the test for which you have registered, you must send an e-mail to nbt@uct.ac.za as soon as possible. NBT Project staff will contact you the following week to explore your options for a make-up test. With documentation of a legitimate emergency (like a doctor’s certificate, or a police incident report), you may not be required to pay a second time.

    Legitimate situations that have occurred in the past include taxi accident on the way to the test site, hospitalization, broken collar bone, and family funeral.

    Writers that become sick during the NBTs are always offered the next available writing session. However, the entire test must be written at the make-up session as partial answer sheets are not scored.

    What if I did not register? Can I still ‘pitch up’ and write the NBTs?

    NBT test materials are sent to each site based on the number of registered and paid writers. The NBT Project is only responsible for providing seats and test materials for registered writers.

    NBT test materials are prepared for each learner that is registered. Materials prepared for learners that do not show up cannot be used again and must be destroyed.

    Learners that register but do not show up are still responsible for the cost of these materials and the officials hired to administer the writing session.

    Learners intending to apply to universities must act responsibly. You must register, pay, and show up on time!

    Applying for credits from other higher education institutions

    Unisa may recognise previous learning from previous formal education. This will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Not all credits achieved at other institutions will count towards a Unisa qualification. Your request for exemption(s) will only be considered once we have received your completed DSAR04 form and a certified copy of an official academic record, a conduct certificate and, in some cases, the syllabus. In the case of international qualifications, SAQA evaluation and the syllabus are required. No exemptions will be finalised on an academic record during the application period.

    You must meet the admission requirements for the qualification for which you are applying for credits and/or exemptions. A maximum of 50% of the prescribed credits may be awarded in the form of credits and exemptions. No exemptions will be granted for Unisa’s signature modules. Unisa reserves the right to grant and/or decline applications for exemptions or credit transfers.

    I wrote matric before 2009. Do I qualify?
