Everything you need to know about NSFAS

Nsfas criteria: For all its hitches, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is the answer to many matriculants’ prayers, providing a way for those who would otherwise not be able to afford an education to get their degrees. AAISHA DADI PATEL breaks down everything you need to know about applying for NSFAS.

    What exactly is NSFAS?
NSFAS is a government scheme set up to help young people pay for tuition at any of the 25 public universities and 50 public FET colleges in the country. NSFAS provides loans and scholarships that will cover your tuition, accommodation, living expenses and travel while you study.

    Who qualifies for NSFAS?
All South African citizens, registered at South African institutions, who are in need of financial assistance and can prove that they’ll be academically successful, are eligible for NSFAS funding. While NSFAS funds primarily undergraduate students, further study can also be covered if it is required for your chosen career. (This would be that case, for example, with law, which requires you to have a postgraduate, LLB degree.)

    How do I apply?
It’s quite simple, really. Full time registered students who meet the entry requirements for the scheme just have to complete and submit NSFAS applications forms at their university’s financial aid offices. The only catch is that funding isn’t automatically renewed, so students need to make sure to reapply every year.

How do they decide who makes the cut?
To determine who qualifies for NSFAS, applicants have to undergo a “means test” to rank how financially needy they are. This is a formula which takes into account the household income, the number of dependents in the household, and the family’s cost of living. Usually, students with an annual household income of R160 000 or less will be eligible to apply. A family contribution to the fees may, however, need to be made, depending on the means test.

Do I need to pay it all back?
The short answer is yes, you really should. Loan repayments are encouraged in order to help fund new generations of students in need of NSFAS. But it depends on your marks. Depending on the quality of your results, up to 40% of NSFAS loans can be converted to bursaries.

Loan repayments are based on the salary that you earn; you start paying them back once your salary is R30,000 or more per year. The repayment rate is reasonable: 3% of the annual salary, increasing to a maximum of 8% when your salary reaches R59,300 or more per year. This means you will pay back R900 a year on a salary of R30 000 a year, or R84 per month. Not a bad deal, especially when you consider that the interest charged on the loan is subsidised at 80% of the rate that the commercial rate banks would charge.

Even though the NSFAS Act of 1999 allows NSFAS to have employers deduct loan repayments from the monthly salaries of those who’ve been assisted by the scheme, about 20% of NSFAS recipients have never paid back a cent. In 2013, NSFAS was owed R15.6-billion in unpaid loans. This means the next generation of needy students have to fight that much harder for a piece of the pie. So if you get NSFAS funding and you get your degree, be a good sport and pay back the money.

Is it plain-sailing after I get my NSFAS funding?
Not always. There are countless stories about students whose fees or additional costs, like res fees, weren’t fully paid, who’s living expenses were paid late or who struggled to get NSFAS to pay their registration on time. Administration, particularly when split between a state organisation like NSFAS and a university or college, can be tricky. So be aware that having confirmed NSFAS funding doesn’t mean that all your expenses will be covered. You also might need to spend lots of time on the phone, writing emails or queueing at the financial aid office for clarification and advice. The bottom line is, you might simply have to pay some expenses out of your own pocket.

For more information, visit the NSFAS website or your institution’s financial aid office.

  • Chrysalis Academy Application Form 2026-2027

    Chrysalis Academy Application Form

The Chrysalis Academy is a youth leadership development organisation as well as a social crime prevention initiative, empowering young people to take responsibility for their personal growth. To achieve its vision & mission, the Academy provides them with the necessary life skills and tools to become self-confident, economically productive and positive role models within their communities.

We are a preventative initiative as opposed to a rehabilitation program. What are we offering? A 5-year youth development programme which starts with an intensive 3-months of empowerment training that takes place on our beautiful campus set in the peaceful surrounding of the Tokai forest.

Our students undergo four different stages of Training:

Orientation Phase, Outdoor Phase, Skills Phase and the Community Phase. During each phase, the students are exposed to extensive physical activities, different learning areas and voluntary work to achieve their development into positive role models. They acquire social values, environmental awareness, life & leadership skills as well as career skills. Throughout our programme, the students have access to individual counseling and life coaching based on individual assessments.

Furthermore, parent workshops and family sessions are offered to promote positive parenting and caring families in the communities. After graduation, our students are encouraged to give back to their communities as positive role models by volunteering at Community based and Non Profit Organisations. Our graduates will be continuously tracked and further supported for 5 years to ensure that sustainable personal growth is achieved.

    Our 3-month Development Programme

    I. Orientation Phase

As a foundation for our programme, a daily routine is established where discipline, neatness and personal hygiene are emphasised. The following life skills are offered: Personal development, Substance abuse, Goal setting, Conflict management, Interpersonal relations, Basic health & nutrition, HIV/Aids, Sexuality, First aid (level 1), Fire fighting (level 1) and Environmental awareness.

    II. Outdoor Phase

Our students head to the great outdoors to test their personal limits, discover strengths and weaknesses,
develop teamwork skills and experience the power of nature. Hiking, abseiling, kayaking and rock climbing are just some of the challenges.

After this phase, the students will be allowed visitors for the first time since leaving home. III. Skills Phase According to the needs in the job market, the students will be exposed and introduced to different technical skills, as part of a career orientation to assist them with future job decisions. Hairdressing & grooming, welding, carpentry, cookery, basic computer and office administration, home care, First Aid (Level 1), Child & Youth Care development are some of the skills offered.

    IV. Community Phase

Our students are prepared for their life back in the ‘real’ world by focusing on life orientation skills and career guidance. Students are encouraged to ‘give back to society’ by connecting with schools and community organizations and doing positive community work like sports coaching in schools, helping at Old Age Homes or marshalling at events.

    Life Coaching & Family Integration

Our professional Life  Coach conducts individual assessments during the Orientation Phase to gather information about the students’ backgrounds and their social needs The Parents’ workshops are an integral part of this programme and 3 workshops are presented during the 3-months training. The aim is to encourage positive parenting styles and restoring caring, loving relationships within the home.Letters from Parents and Students Chrysalis had a positive impact on my son. He acted so mature and confident when I saw him for the first me. He looked healthy. I have started to be more patient, loving and considerate. I will not push him in a direction I want him to go in, but allow him to set goals and achievements for himself”.

    Parent

“ I wanted to change my life, my situation and I wanted to be er my future. I have achieved a lot, I have found who I really am and what I want for my future. I have also achieved a lot of skills, like conflict management, personal growth and leadership abilities”

    – Nico Koordom 11 Alpha

    Health Care

Health Care at Chrysalis Academy is rendered by a chief professional nurse.
To the World Health Organisation health is defined as a state of complete physical, psychological and social wellbeing and not just the absence of a disease. At Chrysalis, we embrace this view by treating our students holistically as a multi disciplinary team.

    Health and wellness is a critical aspect of the 3 – month programme, therefore students also receive education in leading healthy lifestyles which should motivate young people who want to contribute to society by positively changing their lifestyles and;
