POSTGRADUATE APPLICANTS
Postgraduate programmes containing coursework mostly close on 31 October, with the exception of a few programmes. Please refer to the Directions for Postgraduate Applicants 2026 Admission for the relevant closing dates.
Applications for research-only postgraduate programmes do not close. Please select the year in which you wish to start your programme when applying.
SEMESTER STUDY ABROAD (SSA) APPLICANTS
The SSA programme is offered to international students currently registered at their home university and who wish to undertake a semester at UCT. Upon completion of the semester abroad, the credits can be transferred to their programme at their home university. SSA credits do not count toward a UCT qualification.
Closing dates for 2026 and 2026 admission
2026 first semester applications are closed.
2026 second semester applications are currently open and close 31 May 2026.

Must I write both the AQL test and the MAT test?

The university and faculty where you apply will determine which tests you must write. The application requirements include closing dates and deadlines for receiving NBT results.
This will help you decide when to write. Please note that each university has different requirements and sometimes departments within the same faculty may require different tests or have different deadlines.
In general, the AQL test is written by applicants for all programmes while both tests are written by applicants to programmes for which mathematics is a requirement, such as Health Sciences, Engineering, Accounting, and most of the sciences. Please check with each Faculty before you register for the NBTs.
The MAT test cannot be written as a stand alone test.
There are two tests. The Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy domains (AQL) are combined into one multiple-choice test. Each section is timed, for a total of three hours of writing time.
The AQL test is written by applicants to all programmes. The second test is Mathematics (MAT), which is written by applicants to programmes for which mathematics is a requirement.
The MAT test is also multiple-choice and timed, with three hours allowed. These tests are described in more detail under ‘Test Content’.
Is Quantitative Literacy the same as Mathematical Literacy?
The Quantitative Literacy test is closely related to the intended outcomes of the NSC subject Mathematical Literacy. However, the NBTs assess a writer’s ability to apply that content within the context of higher education.
The NBT Project does not determine which test you must write nor the deadline for submitting results. Most institutions in South Africa post their requirements on their website and in their prospectus.

Study information is subject to change and is a summary of the general fields of study. This information was compiled for introduction and orientation purposes and the North-West University accepts no liability for inaccuracies that may occur in this guide. The official yearbook of the University must in all cases be consulted during the process of compiling a programme for a specific field of study. The appropriate yearbook is available on request at: studies@mynwu.info / 018 285 4320 / applicationsug@nwu.ac.za.
Please note that, owing to specific capacity constraints, the University reserves the right to select candidates for admission to certain fields of study. This means that prospective students who comply with the minimum requirements will not automatically be admitted to the courses in question. Because of the capacity limitations and the high demand from students for admission to particular fields of study, students will be selected on the basis of their Grade 12 results for admission to these fields.
