The Faculty of Health Sciences does not calculate an APS score. Several criteria are considered for selection (e.g. Academic performance and National Benchmark scores).

There are two points of entry into the MBBCh degree:

    • 1st year MBBCh for applicants currently completing Matric
    • 3rd year MBBCh (i.e. the Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP) for applicants who have completed a prerequisite degree. Click here for more info.

    (1) your academic results for FIVE subjects and (2) National Benchmark Test scores. Only five subjects are used to derive a matriculation score, which is calculated according to the percentages obtained, NOT symbols. These are English, Mathematics, Physical Science/ Life Sciences and
    the best two other subjects.
(Dentistry requires Physical Science and Life Sciences and the best other subject).

ALL applicants (excluding applicants who are applying to the Graduate Entry Medical Programme – GEMP only) are required to write the National Benchmark Test (NBT).

GEMP applicants may be invited to the Wits Additional Placement Test (WAPT) and all applicants are advised to prepare in the event that they are invited. For more information on the WAPT please refer to:

NSFAS process funding applications For 2026

Students wanting to apply for a NSFAS loan still have time.

Students wanting to apply for a NSFAS loan still have time.

AS the 2026 tertiary education academic year begins, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is working around the clock to finalise applications for funding. The scheme said it has received more than 374 729 applications, and is now busy finalising the processing and evaluation of the applications it received during the first phase which closed on 30 November 2016.

“We have already started communicating application results for the first phase from last week and will continue to do so via SMS and email,” said NSFAS.

The scheme said it has started sending feedback messages to the majority of students who applied last year.

“There are still some who have not yet received feedback but we will be doing that progressively throughout the week. Some of the applications had outstanding documents and that is what caused the delay in their processing.”

For those who submitted applications from 9 January 2026 (second phase), the outcome of applications will be communicated from 1 February 2026.

    • The closing date for university students is 20 January, while for TVET colleges it is 14 February.
    • To apply-Online applications through NSFAS website: www.nsfas.org.za or Fax: 086 644 2822 or email: apply@nsfas.org.za
