The main drivers of the local economy are the automotive; the construction and building; tourism and hospitality industries; Government and private business office parks and wholesale and retail parks.
The key challenges facing the local economy are the expansion of the automotive industry; expansion and improvement of the public transport system, the extension of the Gautrain and the Areyeng bus services routes to the eastern side to Mamelodi; and the expansion and improvement of the infrastructure including business sites and housing projects.
TNC will play a critical role in response to these challenges by training and producing engineers in mechanical, civil and electrical fields; provide focused training of drivers through partnership with the Transport Seta; train and develop artisans; provide training of business development and support to Small Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs).
The critical role of Tshwane North TVET College in ensuring that the provincial and local objectives and strategies are realized cannot be over emphasized.
The response to the challenges will be achieved by partnerships with various SETAs, Government Departments and Businesses. There are partnerships are held with the City of Tshwane (Training); TUT (student placement); UNISA (RPL); GDE (ESSP), BIDVEST (student placement; Health and Welfare SETA (artisan development), etc. Focused training programmes will be offered at different campuses to ensure effective response to local economic needs.
To contribute positively to the achievements of growth and expansion of access in the TVET sector and subsequent mandated target of 1 238 000 headcount enrolment by 2026, Tshwane North College envisages to increase enrolment figures from 15 000 to about 24 500. This would be achieved by increasing and improving infrastructure and facilities and by opening a satellite or a new campus in areas in close proximity to the college. Open and Distance Learning will be introduced by 2026 as a mode of delivery. More programmes that respond effectively to local economic needs will be introduced. Partnerships with Universities will be forged to enable the college to offer higher certificate courses thus increasing opportunities for articulation.
Improved infrastructure and building of extra classrooms is an urgent need as well as the resuscitation of resource centres (Libraries and Laboratories) Lecturers will be encourage to improve their qualifications through a rigorous HRD Plan. Partnerships with industry should also allow exchange of lecturer expertise either through placements or specialists within the industry assisting in offering lecturers and practical guidance/tutoring in workshops.
Students will be allowed more workplace based exposure during each academic year. The development and improvement of the campus resource centres and workshops accreditation will be prioritized for completion by 2026. Online registration should be rolled out from 2016 so that teaching and learning can start very early in the academic year. Access to all requisite facilities and student support services should be equally guaranteed to all students.
TNC management commits to work towards increasing the number of partnerships to address the variety of challenges, increase opportunities for students and staff members and strengthen those that are currently in place. Management will adopt a hands-on approach to ensure that the terms and conditions of partnerships are upheld to gain maximum benefit from them. Student and lecturer placement will be prioritised through the partnerships so that the employability and job preparedness of students are enhanced.
Of critical importance to good governance and effective management is systemic capacity building and increasing efficiency. A rigorous HRD plan will be implemented to ensure competence of staff members. Effective systems need also be put in place to ensure efficient operations and compliance.
TNC has a vibrant and competent Council which is focused on turning the college around to ensure effective and good governance. There’s need to further develop and strengthen management and leadership. The current managers will be capacitated to deal with the many challenges facing the college. Effective management as well as leadership will ensure that the college remains focused towards achieving all strategic objectives.
