Qualify to Study at CUT on the Scoring Scale/Admission Point Scale (APS).

In light of the new National Senior Certificate (NSC) that was introduced in 2008, two sets of criteria are used for admission to CUT.  Candidates who earned the Senior Certificate in 2007 or before will still be evaluated and selected for admission on the basis of the old scoring scale, while candidates who earned the NSC in 2008 and thereafter will be evaluated on the basis of the new scoring scale.

    Please Note

    • A candidate scoring 21 points or less on CUT’s scoring scale will not be admitted.
    • A candidate scoring 22 – 26 points on CUT’s scoring scale must undergo a selection test.
    • A candidate must obtain an achievement level of at least 4(50 – 59%) in Life Orientation in the NSC. Even if a higher mark is achieved in Life Orientation, the value will still only be awarded as 1 on the CUT scoring scale. See CUT quick reference guide for admission points need in programmes.

A candidate who scores fewer than 22 points on the CUT scoring scale in the July or subsequent NSC examination is considered to be a candidate who does not possess the necessary skills to successfully pursue a course of study at CUT under the prevailing circumstances. Such a candidate will not be admitted to CUT.

    • A candidate is expected to possess a minimum level of proficiency in English, as this is the LoLT at CUT.  A mark of 50% for English as Home Language (vernacular) or First Additional Language is therefore considered to be sufficient, although any sufficient proof of proficiency in the English language will also be taken into consideration.  In this regard, see section 4.1.5.4.6.3.4 above and the general language policy of CUT.
    • A candidate may be expected to attend an interview, undergo a selection test, and/or make a written presentation to the relevant Head of Department.  Candidates who have not recently been engaged in study and who apply for admission to postgraduate studies are normally invited for such an interview or are requested to undergo a selection test and/or make a written presentation.  No offer of admission to CUT will be made during such an interview or selection opportunity. Any offer of admission to CUT will be in writing, and will be mailed to the candidate.
    • Applications of foreign candidates are considered in accordance with the same regulations as those applicable to other candidates, provided that the foreign qualifications of such candidates are considered equivalent by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Foreign candidates must complete and submit an application form for international students, and must also meet any and all requirements that may be set for higher education studies in South Africa.

Candidates who matriculated in 2007 or before

CUT awards academic weights for achievement according to the following scoring scale:

    • A candidate for a university of technology degree, diploma or certificate must be in possession of at least a Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent qualification approved by Senate.
    • A candidate for a CUT degree, excluding the Baccalaureus Technologiae degree and higher qualifications, must be in possession of a Matriculation Exemption Certificate or Conditional Exemption Certificate.
    • Prospective/aspirant students already in possession of a Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent may apply for admission to a degree, diploma or certificate.  In this case, the application is assessed using the assessment criteria published on the applicant’s Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent results.
    • In the cases specified in section 4.1.5.3.3, the general minimum score qualifying the candidate for acceptance as a student is as published for that year.  The admission criteria applicable to each programme of study are as specified in the CUT Calendar.
    • Only a person holding a Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent may be admitted as a student for a post-secondary qualification.  However, CUT may exempt a person from this criterion on the basis of the outcome of an individual recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment.  Applications for such an RPL assessment may be submitted to the Assessment and Graduation Unit.
    • If a candidate meets the minimum subject requirements for a degree, diploma or certificate, but scores fewer than the minimum points on the CUT scoring scale for the July Grade 12 examination or a subsequent examination, CUT will consider the following aspects:
    • There must be a place available for the candidate in the particular learning programme.
    • The candidate may be subject to selection in the case of a learning programme where this is a requirement (see the chapter pertaining to the relevant faculty in the CUT Calendar).
    • If an applicant fails to qualify for admission to CUT in terms of these regulations, he/she may be subject to the testing of potential in terms of section 4.1.5.3.6 above.
    • Candidates must meet the necessary subject requirements for the various learning programmes.

The following measuring instruments are used to test potential:

    • Assessment of prior experience of mature learners.
    • Results achieved in the General Scholastic Aptitude Test (GSAT), which determines the potential of a candidate, as well as the English Proficiency Test, which measures a candidate’s understanding of and proficiency in English.
    • Grade 12 results.
    • Any other measuring instrument as determined by Senate or Council.
    •  The results of the above-mentioned measuring instruments are used in accordance with the following guidelines:
    • The results are arranged in sequence of achievement.
    • The best candidates are accepted in accordance with the needs and vacancies in the specific learning programme.
    • A candidate who is not selected may be reconsidered at a subsequent selection opportunity, where the same procedures as those described above will be followed.
    • The candidate must deliver proof that he/she is able to express himself/herself in English, both verbally and in writing, so that he/she can benefit fully from the learning programme of his/her choice, provided that some departments set higher requirements with regard to language proficiency. A candidate will be offered a place in a postgraduate programme on condition that he/she possesses a minimum level of proficiency in English.
    • For candidates who matriculated in 2007 or before, CUT awards academic weights for achievement according to the following scoring scale:

  • Rhodes University Entry requirements 2026-2027

    Rhodes University Entry requirements

Your application will only be considered for admission to the University if you qualify for Bachelor’s degree study AND you satisfy the faculty requirements. To qualify for with a Bachelor’s pass status, learners are required to take seven subjects, four of which are compulsory (two languages, Life Orientation and either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy) and three of the learner’s own choice from the subjects on offer at the school.

To qualify for degree studies at a University at least four of the seven subjects must be from the list of ‘designated subjects’ set out below and the student must have obtained an achievement rating of 4 (adequate achievement 50 – 59%) or above in these four subjects.

NOTE: If you meet the minimum admission requirements this only means that you are eligible for selection; it does NOT mean that you will necessarily be accepted.

    The designated subject list is:

    Accounting                          Agricultural Science                       Business Studies

Consumer Studies,               Dramatic Arts                               Engineering Graphics and Design

    Economics                           Geography                                   History

    Information Technology        Languages                                   Life Sciences

    Music                                  Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy

Religion Studies                   Physical Science                           Visual Arts.

The minimum entry requirements for admission to Rhodes University in 2026 are set out in the following table below. Note (a) the point levels that are required (b) the differences in the achievement levels that are needed for Mathematical Literacy, (c) the need for Life and/or Physical Sciences for degrees in Science or Pharmacy.

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR ADMISSION POINT SCORE (APS)

The percentages achieved in National Senior Certificate examinations (preliminary and final examinations) will be allocated an admissions score using the percentage obtained for each subject. The sum of six subject scores, excluding Life Orientation but including English and any other required subject(s) for the relevant programme is considered when deciding on admission. Results below 40% for any subject do not attract a score. Mathematics Paper 3 does not contribute to the APS score but the results will be captured for the Dean to note when making an admission decision.

    EXAMPLES OF POINTS CALCULATIONS

English Home Language 78% 7.8 points
    Afrikaans/isiXhosa first/Additional  Language 73% 7.3 points
    Mathematics 69% 6.9 points
    Life Sciences 70% 7.0 points
    Dramatic Arts 89% 8.9 points
    Accounting 73% 7.3 points
    Life Orientation 90% 0 points
    Additional Mathematics 60% 0 points
    TOTAL POINTS   45.2 points

    DEANS DECISIONS

An application is usually (and wisely) made well in advance of knowing your final results, in which case the application form requires your school to supply provisional results, based on internal examinations. If your provisional scores are very promising you may well be offered a place to study even before you take the final examinations. Please note an offer is conditional subject to you obtaining “Bachelor Degree Status” and your admissions point score (APS) being maintained or improved.

If you do not meet the APS score of 45 points for automatic acceptance, you may still be considered for a place at the Dean’s discretion. Such places are usually offered with some extra conditions. Some places are usually offered to students with an APS score of 34 – 44 with some extra conditions (see extended studies below).  It is therefore very important to give full information when completing the application form as this is the information that the Dean will use for making a decision.

    Extended Studies Programme

This is an alternative route to university studies at Rhodes.  A limited number of students who show potential to succeed are exposed to a carefully designed and supportive learning environment which enhances their ability to succeed at Rhodes University.  This option is for students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds on condition that they take their degree over an extra year at University.  It is therefore very important to give full information when completing the application form as this is the information that the Dean will use in making a decision.

    NATIONAL BENCHMARK TESTS (NBT’S)

It is recommended that all first-time university entering South African applicants write the NBT’s. If the applicant does not meet the automatic entry requirements the NBT results will be used by the Dean to make decisions on applications. These test results can also be used if a candidate does not meet the entrance requirements in their final examinations.

There are two NBT’s. The Academic and Quantitative literacy test (AQL) consists of two components, namely academic literacy and quantitative literacy. An applicant will be awarded separate scores for each component, even though they are written as one test. Applicants to all faculties should write the AQL. The Mathematics test is based on the Mathematics Grade 12 Syllabus. Applicants who wish to enter Pharmacy, Science or Commerce should write the Mathematics Test. One score is awarded for the Mathematics Test.

For further information about the NBT’s, dates and venues, please visit www.nbt.ac.za or 021 650 3523.

    International requirements

40 points and above will receive a firm offer, 37 – 39 points will remain on hold until the end of September to be considered by the Dean if space is available.

For candidates who offer A, O, HIGCSE & IGCSE, five different subjects are counted.  The basic minimum requirement for admission to the University is a certificate of Full Exemption or Foreign Conditional Exemption from the Matriculation Board. Applicants who have passed A levels are eligible for full exemption provided the passes in approved subjects meet the following requirements:

    A-level:  symbols A-E (minimum of 2 subjects)

    AS-level: symbols A-D (4 subjects and 1 at O-level)

    O-level:  symbols A-C (maximum of 3 subjects)

At least 2 subjects at A-level and 3 different subjects at O-level or 3 subjects at A-level and 2 at O-level

    HIGCSE/IGCSE qualification:

    HIGCSE:  symbols 1-3 (4 subjects)

    IGCSE:  symbols A-C (1 subject)

    International Baccalaureate (B)
