  • National Benchmark Test

    National Benchmark Test

The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are an assessment test for first-year applicants to higher education. The NBTs are designed to measure a writer’s ability to transfer understanding of academic literacy (language skills), quantitative literacy (numerical skills) and Mathematics to the demands of tertiary (higher education) coursework.

It is compulsory for all prospective first-year students at SU, regardless of the matriculation year or examination system followed, to write the National Benchmark Tests. For all NBT-related detail and reservations, please visit the official NBT website at www.nbt.ac.za.

Download: Stellenbosch University NBT guidelines (2026-intake)

You can check if your results are uploaded here a month after your test session. It is your responsibility to check whether your NBT results are loaded.

My NBT results: Click to view

If your results are not loaded: Send your NBT test number, ID number, SU student number and official results to the SU Client Services Centre, at e-mail info@sun.ac.za or via fax to 021 808 3822. SU will then verify these results for correctness and upload them on the system.

  • Nsfas how to pay back

    Nsfas how to pay back

Nsfas how to pay back: Loan repayments are based on the salary that you earn; you start paying them back once your salary is R30,000 or more per year. The repayment rate is reasonable: 3% of the annual salary, increasing to a maximum of 8% when your salary reaches R59,300 or more per year. This means you will pay back R900 a year on a salary of R30 000 a year, or R84 per month. Not a bad deal, especially when you consider that the interest charged on the loan is subsidised at 80% of the rate that the commercial rate banks would charge.

Even though the NSFAS Act of 1999 allows NSFAS to have employers deduct loan repayments from the monthly salaries of those who’ve been assisted by the scheme, about 20% of NSFAS recipients have never paid back a cent. In 2013, NSFAS was owed R15.6-billion in unpaid loans. This means the next generation of needy students have to fight that much harder for a piece of the pie. So if you get NSFAS funding and you get your degree, be a good sport and pay back the money.

Please note that the below admission requirements are subject to change pending selection and possible faculty-specific requirements.

Study information is subject to change and is a summary of the general fields of study. This information was compiled for introduction and orientation purposes and the North-West University accepts no liability for inaccuracies that may occur in this guide. The official yearbook of the University must in all cases be consulted during the process of compiling a programme for a specific field of study. The appropriate yearbook is available on request at: studies@mynwu.info / 018 285 4320 / applicationsug@nwu.ac.za.

Please note that, owing to specific capacity constraints, the University reserves the right to select candidates for admission to certain fields of study.
