    The application process

    You may apply for a maximum of two qualifications, ranked in order of preference (although you may only register for one should both of your qualifications be successful).

    Unisa will inform you of the outcome of your application. If successful, Unisa will indicate for which qualification you have been accepted and will offer you a space for the period for which you have applied (ie either semester 1 or semester 2).

    You must accept or decline Unisa’s offer within the prescribed period of time.

    If you accept Unisa’s offer, you must register for the period for which you have been granted admission (ie semester 1 or semester 2). Should you not register for the relevant semester of study, you will need to re-apply for admission during the next application period.

    Who must apply?

    • Everyone wanting to start a new qualification must apply for admission. This includes first-time Unisa applicants and Unisa students changing to a new qualification.
    • Everyone completing a Higher Certificate or Alternative Pathway / Extended Programme must apply for admission to the follow-on qualification.
    • You must re-apply for admission if you previously applied for admission and received feedback, but did not register for any reason.
    • Everyone planning to enrol for classes at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college under the Unisa-TVET agreement must apply for admission.

    Please note: You must re-apply for admission if you previously applied for admission and were offered a space, but did not accept the offer and / or did not register for any reason

    Admission requirements

    Your admission to Unisa is dependent on you meeting the specific admission requirements for your chosen qualification.

    A National Senior Certificate (NSC) (Degree endorsement) with at least 50% in the language of teaching and learning,
    or
    A Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption or qualify for the exemption from the Matriculation Board with at least a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning.
    Applicants have to be registered with the SA Nursing Council (SANC) or equivalent registering body as a professional nurse.
    Applicants, who do not comply with the above requirements, should consider applying for a lower level qualification for which they meet the statutory and additional requirements.

    Here are the Saint Ambrose Nursing School  Admission Requirements:

    For entry into the NVC at NQF Level 2, you require:

    •  A year-end report for Grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 or an
    •  An NQF Level 1 qualification, or
    • An approved bridging programme designed for the specific purpose of accessing  NQF Level 2, or
    • A Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment to meet the basic requirements for access to NQF Level 2.

    UNDERGRADUATE APPLICANTS

    The admission cycle opens in March-April and closes on 30 September. Late applications are not accepted

    If you live in, or have completed schooling in South Africa, or are applying for admission to a programme in the Faculty of Health Sciences, you must write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs).

    You must register for the NBTs before you apply to UCT. NBT results obtained in 2016, 2017 or 2026, , are valid for 2026 admissions. For admission to UCT, you must have written the NBTs by 13 October 2026. For further information or to register, visit NBT.

    The last date for undergraduate programme changes is 31 October 2026. These requests must be submitted to admissions-ug@uct.ac.za.

    Applicants who need financial assistance must submit their applications on the NSFAS online application system. Applications close on 30 November, Applications must be completed at http://nsfas.org.za/content/howtoapply.html.

    POSTGRADUATE APPLICANTS

    Postgraduate programmes containing coursework mostly close on 31 October, with the exception of a few programmes and faculties which start to close from May onward. Please refer to the 2026 Directions for Postgraduate Applicants for the relevant closing dates.

    Applications for research-only postgraduate programmes do not close. Please select the year in which you wish to start your programme when applying.

    SEMESTER STUDY ABROAD (SSA) APPLICANTS

    The SSA programme is offered to international students currently registered at their home university and who wish to undertake a semester at UCT. Upon completion of the semester abroad, the credits can be transferred to their programme at their home university. SSA credits do not count toward a UCT qualification.

    Phase 1:

    Senior Certificate

    An English pass rate of at least D HG or C SG

    MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Students who register for this qualification should have any of the following:

    • Access to this qualification is National Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification at exit level 4

    • Grade 12 Certificate or National Senior Certificate with the appropriate selection of subjects including:

         o English

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE

    The following is a recommendation:

    DURATION OF THE COURSE:

    Post-basic specialist programmes

    Registered nurses (RNs) and enrolled nurses (ENs) can further their careers by specialising in post-basic fields of healthcare by means of in-service certificate programmes or post-basic diploma programmes.

    In-service certificate programmes provides the minimum skills for safe practise in a specialised unit. Post-basic diploma programmes are aimed at developing advanced intellectual and clinical competence in selected fields of interest, qualifying those who successfully complete a programme to work as a leader, consultant, educator or specialist practitioner in providing evidence-based care to patients, together with other team members, within the scope of practice.

    Before completing the Online Application form, please make sure you have various documents already scanned and ready to be uploaded. Please check the list below of possible documents. Not all are required by every prospective student.

    All prospective South African and International students are required to send:

    1. Copy of your Identity Document (South African students), or copy of your passport (International students).
    2. Colour photograph of yourself. Should be ID or Passport size or larger.
    3. Copy of High School or School Leaving certificate. If you are still in your final year, include your latest examination results. Provide certified English translations if needed.
